CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services

HITsa has developed a program specific to the needs of Transition to Work clients.

Students are completing engaging face-to-face training to prepare them for employment in the community services sector. This qualification is ideal for anybody who is interested in the care and support industries, but is still considering the variety of jobs on offer.  It provides an ideal foundation for an entry level role in community support, or a pathway into aged or disability care, mental health support, youth work, nursing and more.

Whats on in the Kitchen

To say it has been a big month is an understatement with not one, but two kitchens operational this month.

September was the start of our Chef for Life program with our project partner MEGT. The first course has been a huge success with a full class of keen and motivated students looking to develop entry level skills within a commercial kitchen.

The timing of these courses is perfect as we are heading into the busiest time of the year within the hospitality industry, so job opportunities will be plentiful.

Our final day of training culminated with an informal networking session where employers were invited in to meet with the students, explain the opportunities available and have a quick bite to eat.

Chef for Life combines 5 units of nationally recognised training and 3 weeks training within a commercial kitchen. Units cover basic entry level skills including

  • safe work practices - an essential for anyone new to a commercial kitchen
  • hygiene and safe food handling - a requirement for anyone working with food or where food is served and/or sold
  • food preparation equipment - getting familiar with basic equipment within a commercial kitchen
  • methods of cookery - the basics of cookery which cover off baking, blanching, boiling, braising, deep-frying, grilling, poaching, roasting, shallow frying, sous vide, steaming and of course stewing

The skills our students develop over this course provides them with a general understanding of a commercial kitchen and equips them with the basics to be able to be an effective team member from day 1.

CPP30321 Certificate III in Cleaning

What a fantastic month it has been! HITsa is thrilled to celebrate the recent completion of this Certificate III in Cleaning Operations program.

Students engaged in both routine and non-routine cleaning tasks, learning to communicate effectively with clients and operate in various environments. It’s all about ensuring safe practices and mastering the right cleaning methods - skills that will truly set them apart in the job market.

Throughout the training, students tackled specialised cleaning techniques and the results have been impressive! Be sure to check out the photos of their hard work (WARNING: you might be inspired to clean your own space!).

Mark Oliphant College

Introduction to Retail & Hospitality

HITsa successfully ran a Stackable VET course this month in partnership with Mark Oliphant College. Students gained valuable skills in hygienic food safety practices and safe food handling, providing them with essential life skills for both personal and professional settings.

In addition, they received training in preparing and serving espresso coffee - an invaluable skill that will benefit them as they enter the job market, especially since employers appreciate candidates who can deliver a great cup of coffee.

To round out their training, students also learned the fundamentals of selling to retail customers and effective engagement strategies for both retail and café environments.

We’re proud of the knowledge and skills these students are gaining, as was the Leader in the Learning Hub at the College who shared this comment on how well the course went;

"I am so pleased at how the course has progressed. Bridge and Lizzy (the Trainers)  have been fantastic with the students and it would be great to work with HITsa again". Deanne

Clare High School

Intro to Retail

HITsa went North during August and September to deliver an introduction to Retail as a stackable VET program, comprising of three accredited units of training.

HITsa Trainer Lizzy went the distance travelling from Adelaide over 6 weeks to deliver an exceptional experience to the school and students. For the last day of training, the students, school and wider community created a "Pop Up Opshop" event to showcase their retail skills. Students and staff had fantastic feedback to share on the program, with the following testimony received from the school's wellbeing team:

"The Op Shop went ahead and the participants of the Special Options and FLO combined retail course positively shone by all accounts

A sincere thanks to Lizzy whom has travelled up from Adelaide to get the participants qualified in Retail over the last 6 weeks or so.

Though at a distance, I was witness to the amazing work of our SSOs in the M7 space where the course was held who supported, guided and instilled self-belief in the participants whom prior to the course were happy to not engage socially outside of their respective peer groups.

I am also sincerely thankful to those who donated clothing and apparel and those that attended and purchased. I must mention our wonderful friends Veronica and Jenny, whom have been supporting the FLO program in Food Handling and preparation, whom became a big part of the day.

The retail course Pop Up Op Shop raised approximately $136... however the monies raised are not the measure of success.

I am positively affected whilst writing but to hear feedback from one participant who said “I am not afraid of talking to people anymore” … and others whom confidently greeted the customers as they arrived and the rest whom were busily going about their collective duties, to come out of their comfort zones, to be assessed and ‘complete’ their accreditation??? That’s success!!!

Meet Afsana

I am excited to join HITsa Training and Employment as the Systems and Processes Manager, ready to drive efficiency and innovation!

Tell us a bit about your work history

With a diverse career spanning over 20 years in Customer Service, Customer Experience & Training across industries such as aviation, telecommunications and RTO's, I have built a solid foundation in training, leadership and team management.

My journey began as a flight attendant and progressed to becoming a trainer where I had the privilege of training aspiring leaders for a world class airline. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for training and development.

How has my past experience prepared me for transitioning into a new role?

I then moved to Australia in 2018, where I gained valuable insights into the RTO world through my experience. Recently I transitioned into a new role as Systems and Processes Manager, where I am currently learning and adapting to this exciting challenge.

What do you love about your job?

I love the continuous learning and problem solving that comes with my role. Everyday brings new challenges whilst I am still learning, I'm excited about the opportunity to make a difference and find ways to enhance the overall student experience within the HITsa.

What do you find most challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my role is navigating the complexities of compliance adherence in the sector. As I continue to learn and adapt to these new processes, I see it as an exciting opportunity for growth and development.

What is competency-based training?

When you enrol into nationally recognised training with HITsa, you will be undertaking competency-based training. This method of training focuses on your ability to receive, respond to and process information.

Each unit of training will provide you with knowledge and skills as outlined within the unit of competency. Your trainers will guide and support you to consistently apply the knowledge and skills within our simulated training environments to a standard that is required in the workplace.

How will I be assessed?

Competency-based assessment involves collecting evidence and making judgements about whether a student has achieved competency. These judgements will be made by our qualified trainers and assessors.

Assessment involves 2 parts – knowledge and performance:

  • Knowledge will be assessed using a set of theory questions
  • Performance will be assessed using simulated demonstrations which may be conducted in the classroom or in the workplace.
