Employability Skills Training

Preparing the Next Generation of Carers and Cleaners

Since March, HITsa has been running a transformative Employability Skills training program in both the North and South regions called Can Care.

The program introduces participants to the vast range of employment opportunities available in cleaning, aged and disability care.  Training is focused on developing skills and knowledge to support a range of jobs such as commercial cleaning, home care, and / or the delivery of high quality care to the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

The Can Care training program incorporates 5 nationally recognised units of training, relevant non-accredited training and employer networking across 13 days. A blend of theoretical and practical is provided in simulated work environments, ensuring participants are well-prepared for real-world experiences.  Whether it's understanding the principles of compassionate care or mastering practical techniques, this program equips participants with a solid foundation to enter the caring and cleaning sectors.

Working in the caring and cleaning sectors is more than just having the right skills; it requires a genuine passion for helping others.  A number of mandatory  checks must also be undertaken to protect the safety of those receiving support and care.  Many of these can be initiated before securing a job, and most employers or service providers are ready to assist in this process.

For those considering a career in this field, here’s a checklist of what most employers look for on a resume:

  • Proof of Working Rights: a birth certificate or passport
  • Visa: if applicable
  • Federal Police Check
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Manual Handling Certification
  • Proof of Immunizations
  • Infection Control Training
  • NDIS Clearance Screening

A highlight of the program is the graduation day, a celebratory event where students' achievements are recognised. This day also provides an invaluable opportunity to hear from industry experts, who share insights on what it takes to succeed in the field. Their guidance helps bridge the gap between training and employment, giving participants a clear understanding of the industry's expectations.

Below are some recent testimonials from graduates, as well as photos of students undertaking practical skills training in our Skill Centre:

"It is a game changer to have local quality training to encourage growth and development focused on gaining employment. Highly would recommend. Giving opportunities to open new doors and new options." Darren
"All of the units that we have covered in Can Care at Mount Barker were delivered very well. I enjoyed studying in this new building which seemed purpose built. I also enjoyed the class style of learning. It was really beneficial to have teachers in class to bounce off of. I would definitely come back to engage in a qualification course." Leanne

"Enjoyed the training and the trainers. Some days were intense but overall grew confidence in getting a job. I would come back if I ever needed more training." Grace

Whats on in the Kitchen

with Chef David and EO Olivia

What a month it has been - not only have we waved goodbye to winter and hello to spring but our apprentice chefs have been busy little bees in the kitchen.

I was chatting to Chef David whilst putting this article together and asked how he gets such great photos and WHY? His response was perfect - in all classes David has the apprentices take photos of their finished dishes, as its all about presentation... consumers eat with their eyes. And then those dirty words 'social media' pop into your head. I know that I post photos of food on my social media account and I tag the venue and then that goes out to all my friends and you know the rest of the story...be it singing the praises of an amazing dish, or sharing a disappointment.

Cakes, Pastries and Breads were a staff favourite this month, due to tasting opportunities at the office. In hindsight it has also required extra walking/running but it was worthwhile... check out the piccies of the delicious treats the apprentices created (WARNING - look away if you are hungry!!!)

We then moved into the tricky realm of breads and what a production it become - everything from baguettes, sourdough and delicious foccacia. Luckily these all went home with the apprentices, otherwise we would have needed a weight watchers membership to get ship shape for spring.

We finished off the month with Cooked Asian Dishes and covered a lot of ground without leaving the country including:

  • Chinese Pork Char Sui
  • Chinese Fried Rice with Shrimp and Egg
  • Korean Fried Chicken
  • Malaysian Laksa
  • Thai Beef Satay with peanut sauce
  • Indonesian Mee Goreng with Prawns
  • Smoked Char Sui Pork Bao Buns AND YES home made Bao buns

Next month will be massive - not only do we kick off with our first Chef for Life program but we are also now running from our CBD commercial kitchen. Stay tuned...

HITsa Celebrates with Resthaven Riverland

HITsa continues to deliver quality and flexible training to regional South Australia. HITsa's partnership with Resthaven spans over many years and has just delivered another upskilling program in Berri.

Participants completed CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) as part of their traineeship. HITsa trainers travelled to Berri each fortnight to deliver training on site. The student group were split into two classes, attending either Monday or Tuesday, to minimise disruption to the Resthaven workforce.

See below student feedback and celebratory smiles with trainer Marie on the last day of training.

Congratulations to our 3 students from Clarence Gardens who recently completed their qualification.

Picture left are Eva and Kathleen on their last day of class, it was a pleasure to see them each week.

A big thank you to Michael, who has sent us the feedback below.

"Hey friends, thought I'd share my thoughts on the Certificate III in Community Services.

The course was more than 100% enjoyed and was very informative. Jasleen was an absolute joy to have as a trainer. I also had Monika at one stage and Raj for the final unit (Diversity) in August. It was very interesting to hear the stories all 3 trainers and the stories from other students in class too.

I will admit Karen and the ladies at the front desk at Clarence Park were very friendly, helpful and also fantastic to deal with. I look forward to getting back to HITsa again soon."
