A big thanks to everyone who came to our careers morning at Mount Barker.

HITsa appreciates the support of SYC and Resthaven who had representatives call through.

HITsa Compliance Manager Fleur aka "Barista-for-the-day" kept everyone's caffeine levels up - again, thank you!

Lastly, HITsa Business Managers Jodie and Sarah were onsite to share their knowledge and answer questions about training and what it takes to achieve a nationally recognised qualification - a very BIG thank you.

Celebrating Inclusion and Success in Employment

A journey of determination and support for HITsa Student Angella

HITsa is thrilled to share the inspiring story of Angella, a remarkable individual who has completed a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support including work placement, setting a shining example for others living with disabilities.

Angella knew she wanted to support like-minded individuals living with disabilities. Despite the challenges posed by an intellectual disability, her determination made her unstoppable. With the support of dedicated trainers, support staff and an inclusive training environment, Angella embarked on the path to achieving a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support – Disability.

Angella attends Day Options herself, so deciphering the difference between being a participant and learning the role of a support worker, at first, was slightly overwhelming. As Angella’s work placement progressed, Team Leader Pet and the other wonderful staff began to see what a reliable, empathetic, and hardworking team member Angella was becoming. The participants, too, resonated with Angella’s genuine caring nature and ability to learn the role of a support worker.

HITsa would like to thank FOCUS Disability Supports, Learning Support Coordination, Enabling Independence and SYC. Angella will be employed by Enabling Independence where she can now embark on her new career as a Support Worker.

Skills that get jobs

What's on in the Kitchen

Once again it's been a busy month in the kitchen with Chef David delivering 2 units of training.

We kicked off a new unit of Prepare Asian Salads which was a hit with the students and will offer some great options for spring and summer menus once the weather improves.....

Currently Chef David is in week 2 of Prepare Food to Meet Special Dietary Requirements and the apprentices are learning a range of skills relating to both dietary and cultural requirements. We think we are all more aware of the options / ranges and choices required by venues to cater for the needs of the dining public. We loved sampling these dietary catered dishes, which looked and tasted delicious. The real star of the show was the dessert which looked fantastic and tasted brilliant...and is a healthy option for those of us with a sweet tooth.... diabetic friendly Baked Apples with Berries.

  • Fasta Pasta
  • Amber Aged Care
  • Hamilton Secondary School
  • Wellington Hotel
  • Seafire on the Marina
  • Resthaven

Its great to see employers investing in training and providing opportunities for both new apprentices and upskilling existing employees.

We look forward to bringing you Desserts next month - so watch this space.

VIRTUAL LEARNING

It has been 3 months since HITsa started training our School of the Air students that are completing the CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services.

A current student, Molly, would like to share her 'virtual' journey with HITsa thus far;

"I am enjoying the different topics I didn’t do at Uni and learning with a small group of other governesses completing studies at the same time. We are all balancing jobs and further education whilst living so remotely - it is an exciting experience.

A governess is someone who helps supervise students completing their primary education through School Of The Air (SOTA) or other online schools. We live on the stations during the school year, so we very much work and live in small communities usually consisting of the family and a few other station staff.

Governesses have been around for a very long time. We spend a lot of time with the kids we supervise by supporting, playing, baking and hanging out with them. These children are often the only kids on the station where they grow up. It can be hard some days to be motivated to complete some of the sessions as we finish school at 3 and start our online session at 3, but I like to think about what I’m gaining from the experience of this course. Our trainer has made the experience quite fun, with a few laughs here and there".

SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol

Update to online platform

HITsa has launched it's new online platform for SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol short course. Collaborating with CourseBox to develop an interactive learning journey with HITsa's very own AI trainer – Rosetta.

Rosetta summarises course content and delivers it verbally as an alternative method of learning. She is also able to answer all questions (in any language!) relating to the course content.

Students can progress through the course at their own pace, completing self-marking questions and submitting responses that our assessors will then review and mark. While they are waiting for their results however, Rosetta has the capacity to mark the students work across the areas of understanding, application, critical thinking, creativity, organisation and clarity.

The final assessment for RSA requires all students to upload a range of videos showing how they can serve alcohol responsibly and refuse service in a professional manner, all of which will be reviewed and marked by our qualified assessors.

MEET THE TEAM

Trainer Carlo pictured

Meet Trainer Carlo

Carlo has just joined HITsa as a trainer in all things Hospitality and Retail. If you see him around please be sure to say hello!

Tell us a bit about your work history

I have worked in hospitality since high school involved with notable venues, covering many service styles from silver service, hotels, cafes and functions, culminating in managing Windy Point Restaurant for 4 years. I consulted in the opening of venues including Morphettville Junction, Oggi Café, Brunelli Café in Rundle Street and the opening of 88 Seafood and Grill in Old Noarlunga.

At what point in your career did you make the move to training?

I began as a trainer/assessor in 2004. I was with Madec Australia from 2010 to 2024, where I was an original trainer in a team of 3, with no admin department in SA. In that time, we grew to a team of 83 trainers and an admin team of 21. I was the preferred trainer in many high schools working with students with learning barriers, FLO and adult students with limited skills and knowledge.

What do you love about your job?

My biggest thrill and the reason I love what I do is assisting students achieve positive results and outcomes, where previously they didn’t have the self-belief and confidence to succeed. Seeing the realisation that if they put the effort in they will get rewarded.

What do you find most challenging as a trainer?

I find the challenging part of being a trainer is that I always observe the cohort of my class and try to work out what is the best method of teaching that particular group, to extract their best results. I will always tweak the delivery based on my audience, utilising reasonable adjustment.  I try to not come across as a “teacher”, as that could be off-putting for students, so my style tends to be more jovial, relaxed, empathetic and fun - just to be me. I find this takes the intimidation away from students and at the same time, gains their retention.
